Re-thinking sports marketing now that fans are in charge

How are golfers and golf courses using social media & mobile?

I have to speak to a group of golf course owners next week, and I'd like to show them examples of how social media and mobile are being best utilized in golf industry.

Does anyone know of any case studies? Or if you are a golfer, how are you using new media? Are you following any golf courses on Twitter to get discounts on greens fees? Do you use an iPhone app to judge distance to the pin? What's cool? What's hot? What's not? Help me if you can...I'm doing this talk pro bono :-)

Pat if you are located here in maryland I would recommend if you can come to a networking event held tonight at Victoria's a huge golf company owner AJ Ali will be there ...he is a personal friend of mine...6-8 PM - Columbia Maryland...look on facebook invite...Marathon of Miracles is also his non-profit

I'm in Indy...but if you get a chance, ask AJ what he's doing to leverage social tools with golfers at retail...that's another interesting angle.

There is a cool site someone in our office showed me called http://oobgolf.com/ which allows you to input your scores from your mobile phone while you are golfing. It allows anyone that is on the site to track your round, even real time. You can send messages to your friends, even during their round. Cool stuff.

Here is some info that might lead you in the right direction. Your best bet to is to reach out to the Tour and talk to their digital staff. They have several people who are focusing on this space.

PGA Tour - Gives you an idea of what the Tour has at a high level

PGA of America - Example of what most high level tournaments are creating to track real-time states, video... Of course, within the app there is inventory to sell.

We've done the AT&T activation for Pebble Beach tournament for the last several years and rented phones with preloaded apps so fans could track the progress. we can get you a case or more specifics if you're interested.

With the mobile application Shoot It!, you can take a photo of your foursome on your phone, input your buddies' addresses, and have the photo arrive at everyone's mailbox the next week in the form of a cool postcard. http://www.shootit.com

Thanks Becca!

Yes, shoot it! offers all kinds of mobile and social medal opportunities; both for an event/marketing staff perspective and from enabling event/venue visitors to send your content and message to their friends and family! And, we're very different from the "social pix" type applications where we drive people to a website to view/pay for their picture - we enable your staff or the visitors to send REAL postcards right from their mobile phones. And, there's all kinds of promotional/branding opportunities on each and every postcard.

Here's a brief on our event services solution. Or you can go here: http://www.shootit.com/eventservices.pdf

We are a local Cable Media operation and offer Mobile Marketing. At this point we have only done 1 campaign but the client ran an advertising schedule offering a get a free round with the purchase of a free round (resticitions of course) and got a pretty good redemption on the mobile coupon. He also had people opt in for future alerts so that he can send info on disounts, pro shop sales etc.

Hi Pat,

We've had success with golf courses promoting themselves using Video Landing Pages created on our Flimp platform.
I believe you can find examples on our website: www.flimp.net

Thanks,
Terry

Hi Pat,

We met at a couple of the sports marketing events one in SF at Giants stadium and again at Dodger stadium a year or so ago. Anyway I am the CIO for The Bobby Jones Golf Company (Club Manufacturer) and we have done a few things with social media marketing and have plans to launch a more aggressive campaign in the next month or so. Our current efforts involve participating in the blog community and on golf oriented message forums. Facebook & Twitter pages are in the works as well. If you would like to speak more about details such as goals and expected outcomes feel free to drop me a line.
