Re-thinking sports marketing now that fans are in charge

I own a sports consulting business in the college recruiting field. However my 8 year old son is becoming a very accomplished quarter midget racer. I sent a note to the motor oil company detailing how well my son was doing using their product. In reply they asked me to provide them with a sponsorship proposal. Our team has a great crew chief and a very good driver. We are beating people with equipment 10 years older than anybody else has on the track.

What type of proposal should I supply to this company? What type of info will they want? What should we ask for?

Thanks

Bob,

Before I (and probably many others) can provide any quality answer, I have one large question: Is it for the team? Or, for your son?

Sponsorship should be made for the team. Sponsors are more than likely to sponsor amateur teams before individuals, especially at the youth level. Children are easily swade away from things during their childhood, posing a large risk to corporations. You may be able to receive in-kind donations easier than monetary contributions but they have to see some type of return on their investment. What are they going to get out of it?

The proposal should include a team/individual resume, showing why they should support. This proposal should include personal, professional info along with any proven results/providing prime visibility, and what the team's vision is. Even sports teams/clubs should have a business plan. I think I covered the "What should we ask for" question above. Especially in this tough economy, monetary sponsorship are becoming hard to sign. In kind is always a good step into the door and can lead to further investments in the long run.

Brand Placement is going to be key selling point. My companies logo is all over my sponsored team's bikes, gear, box truck, website, camp area equipment, etc. This only gets my website development company more business, a huge ROI.

Coming from experience, don't push your son and let him be a kid. Enjoy his accomplishments. I am in the same boat with my son (8 years old and playing 4 sports), who has strong sports genes from mom and dad. When you start treating him like a professional, sometimes they loss the fun of the sport. I have seen it with the youth that I have coached through youth and high school sports.
