Re-thinking sports marketing now that fans are in charge

I started this group because I once worked in the sports field (Madison Square Garden - Group Sales, TV production). I now do consulting in internet marketing and am discovering the power of social media. I really want to explore how it can applied in this day and age of rock star athletes who have little or no real connection to the people who watch them play. your thoughts?
