you're quite right a sport marketing manager is a sport promoter .
Use sport ad a media . So if you need to raise brand awareness you plan sport sponsorhip programs . If your goal is to promote a product you may use
sport testimonials as ambassadors to promote the product or you mau use big sport events where you can showcase in a sport contest your product which needs to be sport related /conencted and so forth....

Just to share ....I have just finished to work on a collection of 16 DVD on the history and legend of Rugby world. Very exciting even though Rugby in >Italy is not exactly the biggest sport ....Here is all bread and soccer!!
